Cleaning, burner and pilot checks, log placement and safety tests for vented and vent-free sets.
- Oxygen sensor and pilot checks
- Log and ember placement
- Damper clamp for vented logs
Apex has grown fast, and a lot of people here are living with their first fireplace. Most homes have gas logs, often the vent-free kind that's common in North Carolina. Houses change hands quickly, and every hurricane season the tall pines drop limbs on roofs and chimneys. From our shop on Classic Rd we service, inspect and repair all of it, and we answer the phone at any hour.
Sample conversations
Tall, yellow flames that look like a wood fire. They need the damper open, so the exhaust goes up the chimney.
Smaller blue flames and a lot of heat. They burn with the damper closed, which means the exhaust and moisture stay in the room.
Headaches, fogged windows, a sharp smell or black soot on the wall above the opening all mean it's time for service.
With any gas fireplace, and especially vent-free logs, keep a working carbon monoxide alarm nearby.

Most general home inspectors only glance at the chimney. Here's what to do instead.
Wood-burning, vented gas logs, vent-free logs or a sealed gas unit. Each needs different care.
A camera inspection is the standard recommendation at sale time. It sees what a flashlight can't.

Loblolly pines tower over a lot of Apex roofs. When a tropical storm rolls up from the coast, limbs and needles end up right where you don't want them.
Even a modest branch can crush a cap, dent a chase cover or knock bricks off the top.
Pine needles pack into cap mesh and block the draft, especially on gas fireplaces.
Tropical downpours test every flashing seam. Leaks often show up a day later.
After a big storm, a quick look at the cap and top saves you from smoke in the house.
Always. We staff the phone 24 hours a day, every day of the year. A gas smell, a CO alarm, smoke filling the room or a tree limb through the chimney all get an urgent response. For fire, a strong gas smell or a CO alarm, get outside and call 911 first.
They're legal in North Carolina and safe when installed, serviced and used as directed, with the built-in oxygen sensor working and a CO alarm nearby. Because exhaust stays in the room, follow the run-time limits in the manual and have them serviced yearly.
Vent-free logs release water vapor as they burn. Some fogging is normal, but heavy condensation, odors or headaches mean the logs need service or shorter run times.
It's strongly recommended. A Level 2 inspection, with a camera through the flue, is the standard advice when a property is sold. It finds problems a general home inspection usually misses.
For vented logs, yes. It's usually clamped partly open so it can't be closed by accident. Vent-free logs are designed for a closed damper, so check which type you have.
Don't use the fireplace until it's checked. Bent caps can block the flue and push exhaust back inside. We'll tarp if needed and photograph the damage for insurance.
